The PGA Tour’s 2024 schedule will now include eight designated events that will feature limited fields of between 70 to 80 of the tour's top players. There will not be any cuts.
Many can't help but wonder if the idea behind these elevated events came in the wake of LIV Golf’s emergence.
LIV’s Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter had these to say about the PGA Tour’s changes.
“Sounds very similar to another product that’s been spoken so badly about by media and commentators,” Poulter said. “Imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Congratulations PGA Tour. Welcome to the future,” added Poulter.
Meanwhile Westwood tweeted: “I’ve spent the last year reading how good full fields and cuts were.”
Rory McIlroy, however, has dismissed suggestions that the PGA Tour is following in the footsteps of rival LIV and has defended the limited fields and no cuts in the coming PGA Tour high-profile events.
